deeann and i were planning a trip with our beloved friends, nicki and kevin, to go to their old stomping grounds of bellingham, washington. unfortunately, it ended up not working out so deeann and i were stuck with an open weekend and not much to do. as tempting as it was to lay low and enjoy a weekend home, we decided against it and threw our camping gear in the car and started towards central oregon. surprisingly enough, in our two years of living in portland we have never visited central oregon … well, kinda. i did have a failed cross country skiing/backpacking attempt on the south sister (that’s a mountain for those wondering), but we won’t go into that.
anyways, we ended up at smith rock state park which happens to be a climber’s mecca, however we did not bring our climbing gear. i’m excited to go back there and get my hands on that rock. while there we went for some hikes, visited a few breweries, enjoyed the breathtaking scenery, and simply rested outside. we visited bend and later, on our way back to portland, we took the scenic route(every route is extremely scenic) and headed to eugene, stayed one night outside of eugene, then back home.
overall the trip was beautiful. it was hard to believe we were in the same part of the country let alone in the same state. the high desert is breathtaking with multiple peaks and butte’s that opened our eyes to how volcanically active this area once was and still may be. the spontaneous nature of this trip was quite refreshing.

so a few weeks back, gabriel and i slept on the sidewalk in front of our downtown portland rei store along with about 60 or so other people. why, you might ask… why not?
rei garage sale, of course.

this past weekend deeann and i went with a couple of friends to the pickathon indie roots music festival. it was such a great time! the event was on pendarvis farm in happy valley, oregon. a few thousand people came just for a day or for the whole weekend. we were there from friday through sunday evening. if you were staying, you just bring your tent into the woods, follow the trail and put your stakes in a spot that looks good to you. there were four different stages going throughout the day, so there was no shortage of great tunes.
a good time was had by all.
here is a video from the pickathon website. stay tuned for an edited video of my own and be sure to check out the pictures from the weekend.

this past weekend we went camping and hiking around mount st. helens in washington. we had planned on going camping with some friends, not knowing exactly where we were going until we looked up the name of the camp for directions. deeann, our good friend lindsay, and i piled in the car and made the hour and a half drive up to the campsite.
it was a great little weekend trip of camping, hiking, off-roading in the jetta, and hanging out with some pretty cool people. check out some of the pictures here & here.
we have been thinking about making a trip to st. helens with our friend pete from seattle. now that we’ve been this close to this beautiful giant, we are that much more excited to get up on the rim as soon as we can manage. so pete, we’re still in if you are!
